THE Coastal and Flood Protection Fund that helps to guard Singapore from rising sea levels will receive a top-up of S$5 billion, said Finance Minister Lawrence Wong on Tuesday (Feb 18).
In his Budget speech delivered in Parliament, PM Wong said the government was developing and implementing plans to better protect the country, employing a range of solutions from sea walls to land reclamation.
The actual implementation of these measures may stretch over two decades or longer starting from the 2030s, he said.
“But it would be prudent to set aside funds now to ensure we can proceed with these major investments, which will benefit current and future generations,” he added.
The Coastal and Flood Protection Fund was first announced in Budget 2020 by then-finance minister and deputy prime minister Heng Swee Keat, with an initial injection of S$5 billion.
At the time, he said the fund will be topped up “whenever our fiscal situation allows”.
