[SINGAPORE] Former Deloitte Singapore chairman Chaly Mah is set to take over as chair of the National Environmental Agency (NEA) with effect from Apr 1, 2025.

He will succeed Lee Chuan Seng, who has been chairman of NEA’s board since 2019. Lee was deputy chairman of the board from 2016 to 2019, after joining as a member in 2012.

During Lee’s term, NEA made significant progress in environmental sustainability and public health, said the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE). This includes enacting projects to extend the lifespan of Pulau Semakau, Singapore’s only landfill.

This will be Mah’s third chair position currently. He is chairman of Surbana Jurong and Netlink NBN Trust.

Prior to that, he served as chairman of the Singapore Tourism Board from 2017 to 2024, Singapore Land Authority from 2010 to 2014, and Singapore International Chamber of Commerce from 2015 to 2017.

Mah was also chief executive officer of Deloitte Southeast Asia. He retired from the consultancy in 2016, after being with it for more than 38 years.

His expertise therefore spans various industries, including financial services, real estate, private equity and manufacturing, said MSE in a press statement.

Over at PUB, Chan Lai Fung is set to take over as chair with effect from Apr 1, 2025. She succeeds Chiang Chie Foo, who has been chairman of the board since 2017.

MSE said that Chiang has driven the agency towards being future-ready – for instance, in digitalising its water system and using smart technologies to strengthen operational resilience.

The ministry added that Chan, who has been in the public service for 36 years, will bring diverse expertise and experience from her various portfolios. This includes her previous appointments as permanent secretary in the Ministry of Law, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Education.

Chan concurrently serves as chair of Nanyang Technological University’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, and deputy chair of NTUC Health Co-operative.
