DESMOND Lee, Minister for National Development, on Tuesday (Aug 1) succeeded Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong as chairman of the Singapore Labour Foundation (SLF) board, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) announced.
Wong, who is also Minister for Finance, was appointed chairman of SLF on Jun 9, 2018.
During his term, SLF, a statutory board of MOM, scaled up its grants to sustain various labour movement initiatives.
For example, SLF stepped up support for the training and development of union leaders through its sponsorship of the Ong Teng Cheong Labour Leadership Institute’s training and development programmes.
Funding from SLF also enabled the labour movement to push for better wages, welfare and work prospects for workers.
Wong was also the chairman of the SLF Investment Committee until Jul 1 this year, said MOM. The committee’s investment framework has enabled SLF to strengthen its financial capacity to support the labour movement and meet workers’ needs.
