RECKITT’S facility in Tuas is expected to export 190 metric tons of infant formula base powder to the United States for blending and packaging in the coming weeks, after its subsidiary Mead Johnson received import approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

As the US struggles with an infant formula shortage, Mead Johnson expects to import the equivalent of up to 66 million 8-ounce servings of base infant formula powder from the Tuas facility between now and November 2022, the company said in a Wednesday (Jun 15) press release.

The shipments of formula will “feed more than 130,000 additional babies per month”, said Pat Sly, president of Reckitt’s nutrition business.

The Tuas facility is expected to be able to provide 500 metric tons of base infant formula powder per month by October 2022, the equivalent of 15.5 million 8-ounce servings.

Reckitt said that the additional capacity will prioritise channels available to vulnerable consumers such as those who qualify for a special supplemental nutrition programme.

“The FDA’s import approval, along with the Defense Production Act, assists us in drastically increasing our supply to help more formula reach store shelves and the parents who need it,” said Sly.
