[SINGAPORE] The second-last day of campaigning for the 2025 General Election (GE) on Wednesday (Apr 30) will see seven rallies across the island between 7 pm and 10 pm – five of which are by the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP).

Also holding rallies are Red Dot United (RDU) – which is fielding the second-largest opposition slate this general election – and the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

PAP counters PSP claims on housing issues

On a walkabout in West Coast-Jurong West GRC this morning, Progress Singapore Party (PSP) chief Leong Mun Wai said the government has yet to address concerns raised by his party, such as the affordability of public housing and the hike in goods and services tax (GST).

“What has the government done to control or to manage the HDB (Housing and Development Board) flat prices?” Leong asked. He called for a response from National Development Minister Desmond Lee, who leads the PAP’s team against the PSP’s A-team in that constituency.

As for the GST hike, Leong said that the government has “buckets of excess resources on their hands” which should be redirected to improve the welfare of Singaporeans.

Lee did respond later that afternoon, rejecting the PSP’s claims in a media statement.

The minister said he had addressed national housing issues on “multiple occasions over the course of the campaign”, including at the launch of the West Coast-Jurong West GRC manifesto on Apr 23; a press doorstop on Apr 25; and a rally speech on Apr 27.

He added that in his rally speech, he assured Singaporeans that delayed projects had been completed, new supply had ramped up, and that the market was stabilising.

He had also talked about the Standard, Prime and Plus housing framework and how more housing options were being explored for higher-income young couples and singles.

“We are clear about our commitment to keeping housing affordable and accessible for Singaporeans, through the ramping up of supply and cooling measures where necessary,” he said in his statement.

“It is indeed a matter of concern when the PSP makes assertions with little regard for facts,” he added, urging members of the public to consider facts and concrete plans when voting.

WP: Faisal Manap says Tampines presence has brought “some form of competition”

At an evening walkabout in Tampines Central with the rest of his team, Workers’ Party (WP) vice-chairman Faisal Manap said that walkabouts by ruling party heavyweights show how WP’s presence has brought “some form of competition” there.

He was responding to reporters’ questions about how the PAP Tampines GRC slate has received strong support from senior party figures, with both Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong doing walkabouts.

“We are humbled by the presence of SM Lee and the prime minister,” said Faisal, who leads the five-member WP team in a four-way fight in Tampines. “It shows that our presence does bring some form of competition.”

The other WP candidates for Tampines are first-time candidates Eileen Chong, Michael Thng, Jimmy Tan and Ong Lue Ping.

Tampines Changkat SMC candidate Kenneth Foo, who was also present, said in Mandarin: “(Residents) say they want a strong and effective opposition to challenge the government and maintain checks and balances.”
