GE2025: PAP defeats SDA in Pasir Ris-Changi GRC with 67.66% of votes

[SINGAPORE] The People’s Action Party (PAP) has won Pasir Ris-Changi GRC with 67.66 per cent of the valid votes cast, defeating the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA).

The slate was led by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah, who moved from Tanjong Pagar GRC to head the PAP’s team for the newly formed Group Representation Constituency.

The PAP team secured 60,887 of the votes against SDA’s 29,109. Rejected votes numbered 2,483.

Also on the PAP slate were Senior Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Desmond Tan, incumbent Sharael Taha and newcomer Valerie Lee.

SDA’s slate was led by Desmond Lim, who returned as the alliance’s chairman in a reversal of his decision to step down following GE2020.

His team – the only one fielded by SDA in GE2025 – comprised returning candidates SDA secretary-general Abu Mohamed and communications lead Harminder Pal Singh, as well as new face Chia Yun Kai.

Chia, a restaurant owner, had initially announced that he would form his own party – Most Valuable Party – to contest East Coast GRC. He was later revealed as a surprise member of SDA’s Pasir Ris-Changi slate on Nomination Day.

This election, Pasir Ris-Changi GRC and Punggol GRC were formed with the splitting-up of five-member Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, which the SDA had unsuccessfully contested in every general election since 2006.

Lim helmed the SDA’s team in 2006, 2015 and 2020. The party’s best showing in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC was in 2011, when it garnered 35.21 per cent of the votes.

Pasir Ris-Changi GRC, which has 100,957 registered voters, also took in adjacent areas from East Coast GRC.

In 2020, the PAP took 64.16 per cent of the votes in a three-cornered fight in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, with a team led by Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean. SDA came in second with a 23.67 per cent vote share, while Peoples Voice garnered 12.18 per cent of the votes.

Teo announced his retirement from politics on Nomination Day. In a rally speech on Apr 28, Indranee said she cannot fill Teo’s “big shoes” in the new GRC but would serve residents with the same dedication if elected.

She promised voters that her team would continue plans started under Teo, which includes updating facilities and improving transport connections.
