GE2025: Parliament dissolved, Nomination Day on Apr 23; Polling Day set for May 3
The Writ of Election was issued an hour after Parliament was dissolved
[SINGAPORE] President Tharman Shanmugaratnam dissolved Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 15) afternoon on the advice of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, with the general election’s Nomination Day to be on Apr 23.
The Writ of Election was issued an hour later. May 3 will be declared as Polling Day if more than one candidate, or group of candidates, stands nominated on Nomination Day, said the Elections Department.
That means Polling Day comes after the legal minimum campaigning period of nine days, followed by Cooling-Off Day.
The date of Nomination Day was suggested by PM Wong, to which President Tharman agreed, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.
The People’s Action Party (PAP) has been officially introducing its candidates for various constituencies since last Saturday, starting with PM Wong’s team for Marsiling-Yew Tee group representation constituency (GRC) last weekend.
At the event on Apr 12, he told reporters that the PAP will field more than 30 new candidates – the largest slate of new faces in recent history that will include the core of the next generation leadership.

Both the ruling and opposition parties have been ramping up their activities since the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee released its report on Mar 11, seven weeks after it was formed.
Under its recommendation, GE2025 will feature widespread changes to Singapore’s electoral boundaries as a result of “population shifts and new housing developments”, including five new or renamed GRCs.
There are a total of 2,758,095 electors in the registers, the Elections Department said in a statement on Mar 24.
