GE2025: Workers’ Party team led by He Ting Ru to defend Sengkang GRC, will face PAP team of mostly newcomers
The opposition party’s new candidate Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik takes the spot vacated by Raeesah Khan
[SINGAPORE] The incumbent Workers’ Party (WP) team, led by He Ting Ru, will defend Sengkang GRC against a People’s Action Party (PAP) team of mostly newcomers.
Joining He on the WP side are Associate Professor Jamus Lim, Louis Chua, and first-time candidate Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik, who replaces former MP Raeesah Khan.
They will square off against the PAP team led by former senior minister of state Lam Pin Min, who contested there in GE2020, and first-time candidates Theodora Lai, Dr Elmie Nekmat and Bernadette Giam.
The candidates were confirmed on Wednesday (Apr 23) after successfully submitting their nomination papers at Yusof Ishak Secondary School in the morning.
Asked if Muhaimin would be a good replacement for former Sengkang MP Raeesah Khan, and if her scandal in Parliament would cause residents to lose faith in the team, Chua said the incident happened some time ago, and it is important for the party to continue “work(ing) hard for Singapore”.
Khan resigned from her post and the party in 2021 after admitting to lying in Parliament about a sexual assault case.

As a town council officer, Muhaimin comes equipped with a range of skills and technical knowledge which would benefit the residents of Sengkang, added He.
The PAP team did not stay behind to speak to the media after being confirmed as candidates.
In GE2020, the WP defeated a PAP team that had two political office holders – Dr Lam and labour chief Ng Chee Meng – with 52.13 per cent of the vote.
