SINGLE non-homeowners living in Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats will soon be able to raise their concerns to the housing board.

A total of 8,600 households and single occupiers in HDB flats will be invited to participate in a survey on their public housing experiences between this October and next April.

Conducted every five years since 1968 to gather residents’ feedback and capture changing expectations, the HDB’s Sample Household Survey 2023/2024 will shed new light on the housing needs of single occupiers in HDB flats.

The housing board said on Monday (Oct 23) that the latest survey will cover three main areas, namely the HDB population, residents’ social well-being, and physical living environment.

A wide range of HDB residents, including families and singles who are HDB homeowners, as well as elderly and rental households, will be invited to participate. Singles aged between 21 and 54 years old, who are listed as occupiers in HDB flats and who do not own an HDB flat, will be invited to share their views on marriage, housing needs and aspirations, as well as their outlook in life.

The survey also aims to examine HDB residents’ well-being on three levels – personal, family and community – to extract insights on how to support communities to stay resilient via physical and social infrastructure.

Beyond their housing preferences, HDB residents will have the chance to express their views on the facilities available within their HDB estates.

Minister for National Development Desmond Lee highlighted the importance of active participation in the survey in his Facebook post: “Designing, building and rejuvenating our HDB homes and estates is a constant work in progress, especially as our economy develops, society evolves, and the housing aspirations of our population change.”

He encouraged the households and singles who receive the survey invitations to share their thoughts, so that HDB can make meaningful improvements to serve the residents better.

Notification letters about the survey, which can be conducted either face-to-face or online, will be sent to the residents in batches, HDB noted.

The board has commissioned Media Research Consultants to conduct the surveys. The results of the Sample Household Survey 2023/2024 are estimated to be ready in 2025.
