ELECTRIFIED cars made up the majority of new passenger cars sold in Singapore for the first half of 2023, but the rate of EV registrations has not increased.

From January to June this year, a total of 7,524 electrified cars – that is, battery electric vehicles (EVs), petrol-electric hybrids and plug-in hybrids – were registered in Singapore.

This is 56.9 per cent of the total 13,224 new passenger car registrations, according to Land Transport Authority figures released on Friday (Jul 14).

The percentage of electrified cars in new passenger car registrations was 9.1 percentage points higher than the 47.8 per cent recorded in H1 2022.

The number of registered electrified cars was down 5 per cent, from 7,925 in H1 2022.

This was, nevertheless, less than the overall reduction in the total number of passenger cars registered, which shrunk 20.2 per cent to 13,224, from 16,567.

Petrol-electric hybrids made up the largest proportion of electrified vehicles with 5,486 units registered, or 41.5 per cent of new passenger cars registered. Petrol-electric hybrids alone nearly equalled petrol car registrations, at 5,581 units, or 42.2 per cent.

The take-up of EVs and plug-in hybrids was flat, with 1,892 EVs registered. This was 14.3 per cent of new car registrations.

In 2022, 3,589 EVs were added to the population.

Plug-in hybrids made up the smallest proportion of electrified vehicle sales, comprising 1.1 per cent of new car registrations or 146 units. From the end of 2022 to June 2023, the population of plug-in hybrids increased by 144 units.

Petrol cars still comprise the largest proportion of the car population in Singapore, at 84.8 per cent – or 551,235 out of 650,347 total cars. The number of petrol cars, however, is down 1.3 per cent from 558,729 in 2022.

In contrast, the number of electrified vehicles in the population grew by 9.9 per cent to 80,818 – up from 75,534 in 2022.
