Malaysian PM Anwar in Singapore for official visit on Jan 30

MALAYSIAN Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will visit Singapore on Monday (Jan 30) to meet with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and witness the signing of three agreements between the two neighbours, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on Sunday.

This will be Anwar’s first official visit to Singapore since he took office last November.

While in Singapore, Anwar, who is also Malaysia’s Finance Minister, will attend an official welcome ceremony at the Istana. He will call on President Halimah Yacob and have a meeting with PM Lee, who will also host an official lunch in his honour, said MFA.

PM Lee and Anwar will also witness the signing of three agreements: the frameworks on Cooperation in Digital Economy and Green Economy between the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry and Malaysia Ministry of International Trade and Industry, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Personal Data Protection, Cybersecurity and Digital Economy between the Singapore Ministry of Communications and Information and Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications and Digital.

Anwar will be accompanied by Transport Minister Anthony Loke; International Trade and Industry Minister Zafrul Aziz; Foreign Affairs Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir; Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil; Premier of Sarawak Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Abang Haji Openg; and Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

The last three years of the Covid-19 pandemic have been a “confidence booster” for bilateral relations between Singapore and Malaysia, said Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan during his an official visit to Malaysia on Jan 17. He pointed out that despite Covid-19, the Republic’s trade with Malaysia increased 24 per cent between 2020 and 2021.
