New workshops help aspiring hawkers find winning business recipes
‘Hawkerpreneur’ workshops provide training in menu planning, cost control and branding
[SINGAPORE] Aspiring hawkers can learn how to get started with some help from new workshops by food and beverage (F&B) startup accelerator Excelerate.sg, held in partnership with the Asia Startup Network.
These three-day “hawkerpreneur” workshops cover topics such as menu planning, cost control and branding.
“We want to remove the barriers that stop aspiring hawkers from taking the leap,” said Excelerate.sg founder Bobby Yeoh.
Certified under the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications system, the workshops are meant for career switchers, culinary students and anyone looking to start a hawker business.
The first workshop will be held from Sep 3 to 5, with plans for monthly runs over the next year. Each session will enrol up to 15 participants.
The fee is S$1,200 per participant, with SkillsFuture subsidies of up to 50 per cent for those aged 21 to 39, and up to 70 per cent for those aged 40 and above. SkillsFuture Credits can be used for the rest.

Operational skills and unique models
The workshop’s core modules cover menu planning and pricing strategies; cost control and profit optimisation; branding and customer engagement; and developing a “lean hawker model” with the use of software and automation.
Participants will also be guided to develop unique business models, such as new concepts or modern takes on traditional recipes.
Asia Startup Network’s involvement includes bringing in potential investors for participants; highlighting possible tech solutions; and facilitating mentorship by seasoned F&B entrepreneurs.
“Our goal is to empower a new breed of hawkerpreneurs who blend tradition with innovation, ensuring this heritage thrives for generations”, said Asia Startup Network co-founder Elise Tan.
