[SINGAPORE] A new committee with members from both the public and private sectors will guide the deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in the Republic.

The Steering Committee on AVs will ensure that these vehicles are safely introduced into the land transport system, create new jobs and improve connectivity for residents, said the Ministry of Transport in a release on Thursday (Jul 31).

The 17-member committee will be headed by Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow, with representatives from the government, industry, academia and unions.

It will coordinate work across four areas:

    • The near-term rollout of AVs, incorporating residents’ feedback
    • Regulations, liability and enforcement for safety and accountability
    • Industry and employment to improve Singapore’s AV capabilities and create new jobs
    • Technology and safety, including cybersecurity and data policy

In addition to Siow, the six government representatives are senior ministers of state and ministers of state from 11 ministries, including transport, finance and manpower.

The labour movement is represented by Yeo Wan Ling, assistant secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress and executive secretary of the National Transport Workers Union.

The seven private sector representatives are from transport companies, ride-hailing and AV firms.

They include ComfortDelGro group CEO Cheng Siak Kian; Grab chief operating officer Alex Hungate; AV company WeRide CEO Tony Han; and AV company Moovita chief operating officer Limbu Dilip Kumar.

Rounding out the committee are two academics: Professor Marcelo Ang from the National University of Singapore and Professor Zhao Jinhua from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
