[SINGAPORE] BlackOak, a restructuring and insolvency (R&I) law firm in Singapore, will join international legal outfit Bird & Bird from Aug 1.

The Singapore firm’s partners, Ashok Kumar and Darius Tay, will be appointed R&I partners at Bird & Bird. They will bring with them a team of lawyers from BlackOak, Bird & Bird said in a statement on Monday (Jul 28).

BlackOak is a boutique law firm founded by Ashok and Tay in 2016. Ashok was previously the head of restructuring at TSMP Law, as well as a partner at “Big Four” law firm Allen & Gledhill for 13 years.

Tay focuses on special situations, including contentious and non-contentious aspects of corporate R&I.

Both lawyers have acted for various fund managers, international firms and financial institutions on compliance and regulatory matters, as well as special situations arising from their investments and portfolio companies.

Jeremy Tan, Singapore managing partner at Bird & Bird, said: “This addition will strengthen our Singapore and South-east Asia capability at an important moment when Singapore has emerged as a leading hub for international business.”

Ashok said the move to Bird & Bird will allow the team to boost its bench strength with a very “complementary specialist firm” that is a global market leader in the technology and intellectual property space.

This is while retaining BlackOak’s partnerships with international firms, he added.
