NYP senior lecturer Mar Kheng Kok and his team overcame time zones, culture and languages to design the world's first 3D foot scanner.

NANYANG Polytechnic's senior lecturer from the School of Information Technology, Mar Kheng Kok, may have been involved in the creation of the first-of-its-kind 3D foot scanner, but ask him what the key challenge faced in the project is, and his answer is simple - time zones, culture, language.
"For example, we have to converse in Mandarin when working with our Chinese partners. Initially, we communicated with them through a translator. However, we found that to be time-consuming and ineffective as there were instances of miscommunications due to misinterpretations, which affected the schedules," says Mr Mar.
"We then decided to take up the challenge to brush up on our Mandarin so that we can communicate directly with our partners!"
