How the hotel industry in Asia can endure the pandemic
With a smaller visitor pool, those with more efficient tactics will find customers faster.
COVID-19 has infected some 165,000 people across 146 countries and territories, taking some 6,500 lives. Alongside the human costs, travel restrictions in and out of China are impacting not just its US$13.6 trillion economy, but also that of the entire region.
Given that nearly 32 million Chinese tourists visited South-east Asia in 2019, Covid-19 will undoubtedly cast its looming shadow on the tourism and hospitality industry in Singapore, and the region at large this year.
China's share of visitor arrivals around South-east Asia is significant, ranging from 20 per cent in Singapore to 28 per cent in Thailand, 33 per cent in Vietnam and 39 per cent in Cambodia. As the most significant visitor source market for Singapore, China sent 3.6 million tourists here in 2019.
