THE idyllic atmosphere in Chip Bee Garden belies the snazzy array of retail and food outlets it boasts. One of these - with its alluring rows of doughnuts and loaves of bread - is especially packed, even on a sleepy Monday afternoon.

Founded in 2012, homegrown Baker & Cook is one of five food concepts under an umbrella brand called "Global Baker". The artisan bakery and food store made its Singapore debut with the opening of its flagship outlet at Hillcrest Road. It comprises four outlets, with the opening of its latest outlet at Swan Lake Avenue earlier this month.

"Baker & Cook is generation two," says chief executive officer and head baker Dean Brettschneider, explaining how the chain differs from his concepts abroad.
