The Projector to exit Cineleisure tie-up with GV, return focus to Golden Mile Tower
Its final screenings at the Grange Road location will be on Aug 3
[SINGAPORE] Indie cinema The Projector on Friday (Aug 1) announced that it will exit its collaboration with Singapore’s biggest cinema chain, Golden Village Multiplex (GV), at Cineleisure. Its final screenings at the Grange Road location will be on Aug 3.
In its own statement, GV announced that it will take over to fully manage operations at the Cineleisure venue from Aug 4.
The two cinemas entered into the collaboration in December 2023 “to offer filmgoers a distinctive film experience”, The Projector said. A GV spokesperson said that they are co-renters of the Cineleisure space under the collaborative arrangement.
The Projector and GV currently each run three cinema halls in the location.
The indie cinema said: “The result has been an eclectic smorgasbord of fan events, themed gala premieres and interactive film screenings.”
The Projector will be resuming its screenings at Golden Mile Tower from Aug 6, turning its focus back to its original space after the latest collective sale exercise for the building closed without a transaction.

Founder Karen Tan said: “Now, with the en bloc no longer moving forward, we have the chance to return home.
“This isn’t just a move, it’s a return to our roots, a rewilding of sorts.”
The decision to return is an about-turn from The Projector’s April announcement that it would no longer conduct daily screenings at Golden Mile Tower, where it had started in 2014.
It would focus on events there, it said then, adding that the Cineleisure outlet would continue to screen movies daily.
The indie cinema said the move back will allow it to focus on “cultivating a distinctive, community-driven cinema experience”, noting that the original site had “always been a cornerstone” of its brand and promising “even sharper” curation.
Separately, GV said it would “maintain its focus on providing a diverse and dynamic movie-going experience” at the Cineleisure outlet, with a mix of commercial blockbusters, alternative titles and curated event screenings.
On top of “regular programming”, the venue can also be booked for corporate or private functions, it added.
This latest shift in the cinema scene comes as Cathay Cineplexes mulls shuttering its doors.
On Jul 30, its operator, mm2 Asia, said that it had received more letters concerning outstanding rent payments and that it had made several changes to its board.
This followed an update earlier in the month, in which the parent company had said that it was evaluating all available options to address its financial challenges, including, potentially, the winding up of the cinema chain.
