Giving the furniture sector a sexy vibe

The industry is shaking off its image as old-fashioned and traditional and in the process side-stepped the succession planning problem.

SUCCESSION planning is more often than not one of the top three concerns of towkays. Particularly so, if the business is in an industry that is labour intensive, deemed to be entering its sunset phase, or just plain un-sexy.

The furniture industry was all that, says Ernie Koh, president of the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC). But it has since burnished its image, and then some, by pushing its members to embrace design, and now branding.
