GOGORO has been awarded a sandbox pilot by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) to deploy and validate battery swapping as a means for next-generation smart mobility.

In conjunction with the news on Friday (Sep 2), the Taiwanese startup announced its appointment of Jardine Cycle & Carriage : C07 0% (Jardine C&C) - the mainboard-listed investment holding company of the Jardine Matheson Group - as the exclusive distributor of Gogoro’s electric scooters in Singapore.

It is also partnering Jardine C&C to operate and install its battery-swapping infrastructure in Singapore.

Gogoro said its battery swapping sandbox pilot will launch “soon” and will include its smart electric scooters, battery swap stations and smart batteries. This is in line with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 and vision for transitioning Singapore to sustainable energy and transportation, it added.

Nasdaq-listed Gogoro, which specialises in battery-swapping technology, counts Temasek and Panasonic Corp among its investors.

Its interoperable battery-swapping platform Gogoro Network comprises more than 500,000 riders and nearly 11,000 battery-swapping cabinets at over 2,240 locations. According to the company, the platform also hosts 340,000 daily battery swaps with more than 325 million total battery swaps to date.

“Today in Taiwan, Gogoro’s battery swapping enables more than a quarter of all quick commerce deliveries like food and online purchases and nearly 100 per cent of all electric deliveries,” said Gogoro chief executive, founder and chairman Horace Luke.

Jardine C&C will manage the battery-swapping network and vehicle fleet in Singapore. It also seeks to explore working with food delivery and logistics fleets in the country.

“Together with Gogoro, we are looking for partners in the delivery or logistics space that are interested in harnessing this potential and benefitting from this platform with us,” said Wilfrid Foo, managing director for direct motor interests at Jardine C&C.

“With our regional network, we look forward to the prospect of facilitating opportunities for the penetration of electric scooters and battery swapping stations in new markets.”
