COMPANIES may not be able to block their employees from using public file storage and sharing solutions such as Dropbox but they can block sensitive files from being shared on such a platform.

They can also specify what files are allowed to reside in the cache of a mobile device but need to be encrypted or deleted after a very short period of time. Or what files can be accessed only when the user is logged onto the Internet for a credential check, along with other rules.

Yet, few do that. Some 67 per cent of organisations do not have a policy in place around the use of public cloud storage solutions, according to Acronis' 2013 Data Protection Trends Research report.
