RIAAN Momberg, a manager in the South African travel industry, mistakenly switched on his mobile phone data for just one day while in Sydney last year. His phone company charged him about US$500.

The operator sent messages warning of usage amounts, "but I was asleep by then", Mr Momberg, 43, said in Johannesburg. "I've certainly learnt my lesson."
