Europe: Stocks diverge at open

[LONDON] European stock markets diverged at the start of trading on Wednesday, as investors paused following large gains in the previous session.

London's benchmark FTSE 100 index fell 0.2 per cent to 6,146.31 points compared with Tuesday's close.

In the eurozone, Frankfurt's DAX 30 index rose 0.1 per cent to 10,055.40 points and the Paris CAC 40 nudged 0.1 per cent lower to stand at 4,335.14.

Asia equities mostly rose Wednesday following gains elsewhere as some confidence returned to trading floors after last week's sharp sell-offs.

World stocks won a boost Tuesday from an upturn in Chinese inflation and a possible deal on the next stage of Greece's bailout to avert a looming crisis.
