Hong Kong, Shanghai: Stocks down at the open

[HONG KONG] Hong Kong stocks retreated in early trade Friday, tracking losses across Asia as investors took a breather after recent gains.

The Hang Seng index shed 0.96 per cent, or 218.68 points, to 22,659.55 at the open.

And the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.10 per cent, or 3.19 points, to 3,270.12, while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, was flat, edging down 0.51 points to 2,119.18.
