The Hang Seng Index fell 2.28 per cent, or 697.06 points, to end at 29,886.39.
But the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index inched up 0.07 per cent, or 2.40 points, to 3,256.93, while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, rose 0.47 per cent, or 8.63 points, to 1830.84.
