Tokyo: Shares close up on China data

    [TOKYO] Tokyo shares closed higher Tuesday as cautious investors breathed a sigh of relief after China released data showing the world's number two economy grew last year in line with expectations.

    The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange eked out a gain of 0.55 per cent, or 92.80 points, to close at 17,048.37. The broader Topix index of all first-section shares ticked up 0.18 per cent, or 2.48 points, to 1,390.41.
