Tokyo: Shares surge, extending global rally

[TOKYO] Tokyo shares surged on Thursday as a drop in the yen powered exporters and bank shares rallied after an upbeat start to US company earnings season provided some much-needed optimism.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange soared 3.23 per cent, or 529.83 points, to close at 16,911.05.
The broader Topix index of all first-section shares jumped 2.92 per cent, or 38.91 points, to 1,371.35.
