Tokyo: Stocks close higher on US-China trade hopes

[TOKYO] Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei index gained more than 1 per cent on Monday on hopes the United States and China will avoid escalating trade frictions, and with a cheaper yen also supporting the market.
The Nikkei 225 index added 1.02 per cent, or 219.35 points, to close at 21,822.04, while the broader Topix index was up 0.73 per cent, or 11.87 points, at 1,627.59.
