Tokyo: Stocks open lower on fears global economy is slowing

[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks opened lower on Wednesday on fears that the global economy may be slowing after US data pointed to weakness in the manufacturing sector.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was down 0.19 per cent or 40.07 points at 20,585.09 in early trade, while the broader Topix index was down 0.32 per cent or 4.77 points at 1,506.02.
