[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks opened cautiously higher on Wednesday, despite a weak lead from financial markets in Europe and on Wall Street following another drop in crude prices.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 0.26 per cent, or 42.42 points, to 16,127.86 in opening deals, holding ground following a whopping 5.4-per cent loss the previous day.

The broader Topix index of all first-section shares edged up 0.12 per cent, or 1.54 points, to 1,305.87.
