Tokyo: Stocks slump at open, extending global rout

[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Monday, extending a global rout as a stronger yen hit exporters, with investors focusing on central bank meetings in the US and Japan later this week.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 1.70 per cent, or 282.25 points, to 16,319.11 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares lost 1.71 per cent, or 22.75 points, to 1,307.97.
