Court lays out roadmap for class-action lawsuits
[SINGAPORE] Singapore's apex court has, for the first time in the country's legal history, laid out a comprehensive roadmap for class-action suits filed here, detailing - in a recent appeal judgment - what can and cannot be allowed in order for such actions to proceed.
Among various things, the Court of Appeal ruled that the interests of the claimants in a class action need not be identical in all respects, although the action should not be allowed if it is made up of completely disparate claims.
The court made these rulings, upon hearing an appeal relating to a class-action suit brought by 202 ex-members of the former Sijori Resort Club against the club's current owner, Treasure Resort.
