ABOUT 650 Volkswagen diesel vehicles registered in Singapore have been fitted with the Type EA 189 EU5 diesel engine and the defeat device, the German car maker's Singapore unit has said.

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Monday, the declaration was made by Volkswagen Singapore after its investigations following reports of the Volkswagen diesel emissions discrepancies.

The German auto giant is facing accusations that it installed software on millions of diesel cars worldwide to cheat emissions tests and evade limits on nitrogen oxide and other pollutants.

"NEA takes a serious view of any misrepresentation by Volkswagen Group that their vehicles fitted with the EA 189 EU5 engines comply with the vehicle emission standards stipulated in the Environmental Protection and Management (Vehicular Emissions) Regulations," the agency said.

NEA added that approval for all affected Volkswagen diesel vehicle models has been suspended. No new registrations will be allowed. The suspension will be in place until Volkswagen has completed rectification of all affected vehicles.
