Are shipping companies all at sea on cyber security?
It is terrifying to find out how easily vessels' radar, controls and mechanical systems can be hacked into and subverted while the ship is under way
IT IS easy to be complacent about cyber security, particularly if you are a very small business. Your columnist must admit to giving the issue little attention, apart using some very standard anti-virus software,
However I did have a vague feeling that the big players in the shipping business must have had cyber security all tied up. After all, some of the big shipping and shipping services companies were among the first to be IT savvy. Surely the big IT networks that international shipping depends on must be bullet-proof.
That complacency was shot to pieces late last year when it emerged that major shipping group AP Moeller-Maersk and shipping services giant Clarksons had both been the subject of damaging cyber attacks.
