Gulf Air looks to Middle East routes to boost passenger growth


BAHRAIN'S Gulf Air is counting on Middle East routes to help drive passenger growth and turn around the loss-making airline, its deputy chief executive said on Sunday.

The state-owned Gulf carrier is adding eight destinations to its network this year, mostly to Middle East cities, as part of a strategy to fly to over 60 destinations by 2023.

"At the moment we want to re-establish and affirm our position in the Middle East," deputy CEO Waleed Abdulhameed al-Alawi said in Dubai on Sunday.

Flights to other cites outside the region are planned for following years, although a decision on which exact destinations and when they would be launched has not been made, he said.

Mr Alawi declined to disclose when the airline was targeting profitability but said that it was meeting its internal targets on time.

Middle East air traffic is dominated by Qatar Airways, Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways, and Dubai's Emirates, which focus on linking east and west traffic flows through their Gulf hubs.

The majority of Gulf Air passengers start or end their journey in Bahrain with roughly a third transiting through, Mr Alawi said. The airline wants to increase origin and destination traffic by carrying more tourists heading to Bahrain, he said, adding that a recent oil discovery would see an increase in corporate travellers to the country.

Bahrain's tourism and financial sectors were hit in 2011 by protests by the Shi'ite Muslim majority against the country's Sunni Muslim rulers.

Gulf Air expects to carry 5.5 million passengers this year, up from 5.3 million in 2017, and the fleet will expand to 35 aircraft, up from 28, Mr Alawi said. REUTERS
