LTA awards S$363m civil contract for Cross Island Line Phase 1

THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a joint venture between Singapore Engineering and Construction and Sinohydro Corporation (Singapore Branch) a S$363 million civil contract to design and construct Pasir Ris East station and tunnels under the Cross Island Line (CRL) Phase 1.

In a press statement on Monday (Feb 7), LTA said construction for the station is expected to start in the second quarter of 2022, with passenger service expected to commence in 2030.

The station is located along Pasir Ris Drive 1 and safety measures will be implemented to mitigate the impact of construction to residents and motorists, including staggering stages of traffic, LTA said.

Measures will also be in place during excavation, which is expected to be 25 metres deep, to ensure stability of the ground and its surrounding buildings, the authority added.

The CRL is Singapore's eighth MRT line and will be constructed in three phases. Almost half of its stations will be interchanges with other rail lines.

Phase 1 of the CRL will be 29 kilometres long and comprises 12 stations to serve residential and industrial areas including Hougang. LTA expects over 100,000 households to benefit from this phase of the CRL, which is expected to be completed by 2029.

Civil engineering and construction specialist Singapore Engineering and Construction previously worked on the construction of Tai Seng Facility Building, which serves the Downtown Line, as well as the widening of Keppel Viaduct.

Meanwhile, hydropower engineering and construction company Sinohydro Corporation is currently constructing Napier and Marina South stations for the Thomson-East Coast Line.
