THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Monday said it has awarded two contracts worth S$143.8 million to Or Kim Peow Contractors to improve sheltered walkway connectivity to public transport nodes.

The first contract, which covers 38 LRT stations in Bukit Panjang, Sengkang and Punggol, has been awarded for S$60.9 million.

The second contract, which covers 29 MRT stations in the central and southern areas of Singapore as well as Bukit Merah bus interchange, has been awarded for S$82.9 million.

Works for these two contracts are expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2015 and will complete progressively by 2018.

Under the Walk2Ride programme, announced in January 2013, LTA will expand the coverage of the sheltered walkway network by ensuring sheltered connectivity between transport nodes and schools, healthcare facilities, residential developments and public amenities within a 400-metre radius of all MRT stations and within a 200-metre radius of all LRT stations and bus interchanges.

The Walk2Ride programme will also connect about 100 existing bus shelters with high usage to trip generating hubs within a 200-metre radius of these bus shelters, according to LTA.

Besides sheltered walkways, LTA will also ensure barrier-free connectivity with signage and network maps for a comfortable, convenient and seamless journey when commuters transit between transport nodes.
