SINGAPORE Changi Airport handled 5.26 million passenger movements in January 2017, up 8.2 per cent from a year ago.

Passenger traffic growth was boosted by air travel demand to and from Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and South Asia.

China led the gainers, with a strong 31 per cent growth in passenger traffic as "this coincided with the Lunar New Year holidays occurring at the tail end of January this year", the Changi Airport Group said on Thursday. Traffic from India and Indonesia rose 14 per cent, and Malaysia 12 per cent.

As for Changi's top 10 cities, travel to and from Denpasar increased 18 per cent year-on-year. Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta also saw healthy growth.

Aircraft movements were 4.8 per cent higher with 31,600 landings and takeoffs, while cargo shipments were steady at 158,690 tonnes, compared to a year ago.

Changi Airport serves more than 100 airlines flying to some 380 cities in about 90 countries and territories worldwide. Each week, about 7,000 flights land or depart from Changi, with more than 58.7 million passengers passing through the airport a year[1].
