Singapore Maritime Week 2018 to draw 30,000 visitors
SINGAPORE'S flagship maritime event is expected to draw 30,000 visitors on the back of a week packed with programmes that anchor on digitalisation and transformation of the industry.
Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the 13th edition of the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW 2018) returns Apr 21 to 29.
This year, the annual week-long event will centre on the theme "Positioning for Future Growth - Driving Connectivity, Innovation and Talent". This vision for Singapore to be the Global Maritime Hub for Connectivity, Innovation and Talent is outlined in the International Maritime Centre 2030 Strategy Review and the Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map.
The 2017 edition of SMW, which incorporates the biennial SEA Asia, drew 42,000 visitors.
MPA's chief executive Andrew Tan said that in addition to providing a platform for industry players to debate the current issues, the agency will be inking several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with industry partners at SMW 2018.
"These MoUs seek to enhance Singapore's physical and non-physical connectivity, build up future capabilities for efficient port operations and safe, secure navigation, bolster Singapore's innovation ecosystem and develop a future-ready talent pool."
SMW 2018 will feature 19 forums and conferences, 11 networking receptions and four public outreach activities. The CEO of the world's largest shipping line, AP Møller-Maersk, Søren Skou, will share his insights as the keynote speaker of this year's Singapore Maritime Lecture.
The inaugural conference titled Global Perspectives: The Future of Shipping gathers panellists from well-known industry names, Clarkson Research and Wilhemsen Ship Management, leaders of emerging businesses such as Lazada Group and Grab and an artificial intelligence expert from IBM. These business leaders and experts will share views on the industry transformation and possible disruption to current business models.
The Singapore Maritime Technology Conference and Exhibition 2018 returns for the third time with the theme Shaping the Future Maritime Industry through Digital Innovation. Focusing on digital innovation in the maritime industry, the conference will evaluate how the industry has progressed, and identify opportunities and gaps in digital innovation and technology adoption.
Delegates from the maritime insurance sector will meet at the inaugural General Insurance Association of Singapore-International Union of Marine Insurance Asia Forum 2018 to discuss Singapore's marine insurance market and the impact of emerging technology on shipping and marine insurance.
SMW 2018 will also see the fun-filled Amazing Maritime Challenge for the man on the street. Participants will race against time as they complete tasks in different parts of Singapore that will enable them to learn more about the maritime industry.
