Staying green will get tougher, more expensive
It's a challenge just complying with the raft of environmental regulatory measures in the pipeline
A FEW weeks ago, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) announced that its Green Ship Programme (GSP) had reached a new milestone with the addition of more than 50 ships from 41 companies.
The GSP encourages Singapore- flagged ships to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions. Qualifying ships can enjoy a reduction of Initial Registration Fees and a rebate on Annual Tonnage Tax. MPA says that, since the GSP's inception in 2011, 247 ships have joined the programme.
Also, 10 additional maritime companies signed the Maritime Singapore Green Pledge. This brings the total number of signees to 100 companies since it started four years ago.
