US opens probe after Tesla Model S's fatal crash in autopilot mode

Regulator is investigating 25,000 cars equipped with the system

SAFETY FEATURE: When Autopilot launched in October, Mr Musk cautioned that the hotly anticipated function was in beta mode, or a test phase of development, with full 'hands-off' driving not recommended.


A FATAL accident in which the driver of a Tesla Motors Inc Model S car operating in Autopilot mode was killed in a collision with a truck has prompted an investigation by federal highway safety regulators, the US government and Tesla disclosed on Thursday.
