Telecommuting, as a result of changing workforce expectations, was already trending over the last few years; the Covid-19 pandemic accelerates its adoption and positively challenges longstanding barriers, notably that of mindset and culture. Having implemented flexible working since 2013, telecommuting is not new to EY, but we too have had to be responsive to the scale required today. To be clear, telecommuting is not suited for every role nor preferred by every individual. What this crisis offers is an opportunity to strategically rethink how we plan our workforce; how virtual communications can help optimise real estate and lower carbon footprint; and how we prioritise investments in technology and soft skills like teaming and leadership in a virtual workforce, which is increasingly vital in building a sense of belonging and a culture of trust, empowerment and performance.
