MY father was wise - he always gave advice indirectly. Most critically, when I hesitated about whether to do literature or law at Cambridge, he got my old English teacher to speak to me, and guide me towards law. He knew what my strengths were, and how they would suit a career in law. But he also understood that he could not decide for me.
