2020 US elections: Uncertainty? Yes. Opportunities? Also yes

Published Tue, Oct 6, 2020 · 09:50 PM

WITH the 2020 US general election a month away, now is the moment investors begin paying attention to the state of the race and possible policy changes.

The election of former vice-president Joe Biden could result in increased corporate taxes and fiscal spending as the country tides over the effects of Covid-19. The resulting weakening of the greenback combined with less geopolitical volatility could in turn boost Asian equities.

If Donald Trump retains the White House, he is likely to continue intensifying US-China relations. Asian markets would experience immediate shockwaves; similar to the effects in the wake of the 2016 election when Japan's Nikkei 225 closed 5.4 per cent lower and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 2.2 per cent.
