UNTIL just a few years ago, DNA tests were closely associated with paternity tests or criminal investigations. But their applications and popularity have expanded significantly as test kits become more widely available at lower prices.
Today, you could purchase a DNA test kit if you wish to ascertain your ancestry or your predisposition to illnesses, or to get a snapshot of other health aspects such as your sensitivity to certain foods. Test kit prices start at under S$200.
Now healthcare insurer Aetna International, which focuses on group benefits, has launched a DNA test kit as an optional feature for its corporate clients in its effort to focus attention on employees' health and wellness. It hopes this would motivate employees to proactively take action on their health, which would ultimately help to dampen rising healthcare costs.
