Drawing lessons from history to make a case for Chinese equities

    A QUARTER of a century ago I suggested, in an article for The Business Times, that we were witnessing the foundation forming for an excellent opportunity to invest in Asian markets. At the time, during the depths of the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC), such a notion seemed unfathomable.

    Witnessing the collapse of many regional currencies, while much of the region was in deep economic recession, it seemed that every headline brought more bad news and violent lurches in stock prices. Conventional wisdom was that the Asian miracle had been an illusion.

    The transformation of Asian markets

    Nothing could have been further from the truth. What transpired during those challenging times shaped the future of the region – laying the foundations for much of the growth and resilience enjoyed across Asia over the past two decades.
