Spinning the wheel of fortune
The odds are firmly in your favour with a proper analysis of gaming firms
There is an old Chinese saying: "For every ten gamblers, nine will be losers". This may be the case for a down-at-luck gamer staring in shock at the card table, but the casino itself may not be on a winning streak either.
Despite the deep-pile-carpet glamour and general hype about how profitable the casino business model potentially can be, we need to remember that gaming is actually a highly regulated and heavily taxed industry. After all, society expects to be compensated for absorbing the social costs that gambling engenders. Thus, few public voices are lobbying against gaming levies.
Casinos and gaming facilities invariably come with world-class accommodation and other high-end leisure amenities as standard. This infrastructure is hugely capital intensive, and it can take years of profitability before a facility can finally break even.
