Transamerica sees strong growth for universal life plans in Asia

Sales in the region have just about tripled in the past three years, says the insurer

ROBUST growth in the wealth and number of high net worth individuals in Asia has buoyed the universal life business of Transamerica Life (Bermuda).

Transamerica pioneered universal life policies, which are jumbo life insurance policies with returns linked to a steady interest or crediting rate.

Damiaan Jacobovits de Szeged, the firm's president and chief executive, said sales in the region have just about tripled in the past three years.

"Part of the growth is catch-up and regaining market share, and a significant amount is market growth," he said.

"There is a long-term trend that's supportive for our industry. The high net worth market is growing the fastest in Asia.
