    THE first time I made a team member cry was in April 2020, during the pandemic lockdown. As I was giving her feedback on her work over a phone call, I heard her sniffling.

    In that moment, I was confused and annoyed. “Why was she crying?” I ranted to my husband later. “I was just being honest.”

    I rationalised the incident by deflecting and blaming her: “She’s too sensitive. She needs to toughen up. Maybe she’s not cut out for this job.”
