Costs and carbons: A different view of ESG
Environmental, social and governance issues are not just about returns on investment, but profitable sustainability for all
WHY it took so long to discover that some form of carbon kills is not clear. I had to drive from one side of the city to the other on my motorbike in the Great Smog of London in December 1952. The smog killed 12,000 people, damaged my motorbike and started a ban on open coal fires in UK towns. There was no attempt to deter industrial smog for another generation.
It took long enough to find out that tobacco juices are fatal and that asbestos induces the nastiest forms of cancer - both of these facts also learnt only in my lifetime. And humankind's incessant search for the fount of all energy is still not concluded although we have understood the power of wind, sun and wave for at least 2,000 years and of hydrogen for a somewhat shorter time. We have just not had such a compelling need to harness them effectively.
